Building infrastructure for collaborative success through a relational approach
The California Medicine Scholars program, a network of statewide initiatives, faced a unique challenge as they prepared for their first major convening: while the program was an early stage initiative, it carried decades of momentum from passionate advocates that required a strong infrastructure for collaboration. The infrastructure gap led to weakened communication, unclear deliverables, and siloed efforts. To address these issues, the network sought Fractal Strategies’ expertise to facilitate a successful convening that would strengthen collaboration, set shared priorities, and align resources to better serve students of color enrolling in medical school.
Process
Fractal Strategies approached this challenge by leaning into the power of relationships and dialogue. We encouraged program leaders to zoom out of their individual campus work and engage in honest conversations about the network’s challenges and opportunities. By asking thoughtful questions and focusing on data-driven decision-making, we helped the group identify shared priorities that reflected the network’s collective needs.
Recognizing a need for infrastructure to collaborate, we guided the participants in establishing clear communication channels, defining roles, and promoting transparency and continuous learning. Throughout the convening, we used adaptive facilitation techniques to adjust the agenda in real time, ensuring that all voices were heard and that the group stayed focused on the convening’s objectives.
Results
The convening led to a renewed commitment among network members and a stronger sense of shared goals. The group successfully identified actionable next steps and laid the groundwork for more effective collaboration. With a clearer infrastructure in place, the network is now better equipped to support students across the state – fostering improved communication, defined roles, and a culture of ongoing learning.
