Our Work

Fractal Strategies is co-founder of this transformative justice grant program that provides funding to women-owned small businesses in LA County, with a focus on Black women. The Wild Seed is an investment in Black women business-owners as the bedrocks of our communities. 

Fractal Strategies helped acquire $1.2 million for the collective and co-designed the grant and technical assistance program centering principles of trust-based philanthropy. We manage the grant program, leads the program’s research and evaluation, and provides business strategy support to small businesses in the network. We do not position ourselves as the “experts” but as a resource to support businesses in maximizing their full potential.

Fractal Strategies helped incubate Umoja Food Collective – a network of Black-owned, values-driven food businesses focused on advancing food justice and increasing economic opportunity in South LA. Black-owned businesses are instrumental in protecting Black communities from gentrification and displacement, employing local residents and ensuring resources stay within the local economy. Additionally, Black food businesses are more likely to employ folks in re-entry, with language barriers, or who face other barriers to employment. 

Fractal Strategies provided strategic, administrative, research, and resource development support to bring the collective from an idea to its own 501c3. We acquired start-up funds, designed a strategic framework, supported planning, collected stories of impact from members, and co-designed programming to help sustain values-driven food businesses in the community. Through our narrative strategy efforts, Fractal Strategies helped acquire over $600,000 in revenue for Umoja and its members, which has catalyzed financial and technical assistance to support Black-owned food businesses throughout Los Angeles.

Fractal Strategies manages stakeholder engagement and research for The Garden Leimert Park, a collective of developers and community organizations working to create a grocery store and community-supporting retail in Leimert Park. Fractal Strategies developed an outreach strategy for the collective and is working with key partners –  Partnership for Growth LA, Treehouse LA, and Swell Media – to collect feedback from the community on priorities for the grocery store. 

Working with our partners at Partnership for Growth LA, Fractal Strategies provides strategic advisement to the collective.  We also offer data analysis and research support, aggregating findings from the survey and other efforts to ensure the design and development of the store is rooted in community needs and aspirations.

Fractal Strategies is a strategic partner, helping to catalyze this unique partnership between Los Angeles Urban League and Concerned Citizens Community Involvement (CCCI) focused on workforce development and digital equity in South Los Angeles. This group is working to launch a Community Tech Lab in a mixed-use affordable housing development for formerly houseless seniors in the heart of South LA. The Lab will provide training, learning, and employment opportunities for seniors and youth throughout the community.

Fractal Strategies provides network stewardship and narrative strategy support to bring the Community Tech Lab and UPLIFT workforce development programming to life. Fractal Strategies has already helped to acquire close to $2 million in multi-year funding for UPLIFT partner, CCCI, along with strategic advisement on its over $50 million mixed-use senior housing development project. Through continued resource development and strategic support, we are helping the collaborative identify resources and key partners to transform its vision into a reality.
